In this post, I will explain my first experience with a 3D printer and what it was like for me. I was gifted my 3D printer on Christmas of 2024. I had seen a few before but was never able to try one for myself.

The Set Up

To begin the first printing process my brothers and I had to undergo a few processes that tested the waters. There is a boat model that was instructed to print out to test how the speed would affect the printing process. In this case, we tried 100%, 150%, 200%, and 250%. In the end, we found as 100 and 150 were almost the same result so it was decided that we would be using 150 for most of the projects. It was now that we could finally start printing different projects.

Eldritch Horror Portal Holders

The first items that I printed were portal holders for the game Eldritch Horror made by Fantasy Flight Games. As Eldritch Horror is one of my favorite games, I was pretty excited. After it was done, I found they came out great, the tips of the portal seemed to be easily broken but in the end, is still came out really well as you can see in the picture to the side.

The items I printed second were some counters intending to use them for Magic: The Gathering. These only ended up taking one to two hours to complete. After printed, I had to use a sharpie in order to make the numbers visible. It took a while but I was happy with how they turned out. It was this project that made me feel like 3D printing takes a good amount of time to put together even if printing.

The Mimic Dice Tower

My 3rd and current project I am printing is a mimic dice tower. It is separated into nine parts that are glued together. This is my first project in which I had to put a lot of pieces together but I was really happy about the result. Originally I thought the mimic dice were going to be about the size of my hand but I found out after printing the first piece that it was like the size of my head which I should have assumed as they also said it was a dice storage. I think that I will do a similar project in the future but hopefully, it will not take as long as it took for this one.

Feelings on the Printer

In the end, I am really happy that my brothers got me this for Christmas as there are so many uses that all of my family will get to use this for in the future. Many of these would include D&D, Game Board Games, Organizers, or Decorative Magic: The Gathering products.
